Tragedy struck on Sunday evening in Plateau State as a man and his son die, while three other people sustained injuries in a road crash at Sabon Barki in Jos South Local Government Area.
The crash, which occurred at about 4:20 pm, involved a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, conveying a family returning from church.
An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, who confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos on Sunday, said the tricycle caught fire after another vehicle hit it.
According to him, the victims’ mother sustained a broken leg, while two other children and the tricycle rider were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims.Make PUNCH part of your everyday experience.Add us to your Preferred Sources
“But the fire was too much for us to handle. It was beyond our strength, and we could not do much to rescue them from the burning tricycle,” Gyang said.
He said he did not witness the actual collision.
“When the other vehicle hit the Keke, I was not there. I only came across the scene afterwards and saw people crying,” he added. The eyewitness further alleged that the driver of the other vehicle fled the scene after the crash.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, also confirmed the deaths, saying two male victims were trapped under the vehicle.
“The accident was a bad one. Two persons died — a male adult and another male. They were trapped under the vehicle. The bus driver who caused the accident ran away. It is rather unfortunate,” Longsan said.
He urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic rules while driving.
