Atiku Makes Fresh Accusation Against Tinubu, Reveals Plan for Retired Police Officers Ahead of 2027 Election
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu of abandoning retired police officers to poverty, while simultaneously demanding urgent action on the Police Exit Bill.
These officers enforced Nigeria’s laws for decades. They should not have to beg outside the legislature for its members to act.
Atiku highlighted the dire conditions faced by former law enforcement personnel, noting that many have been reduced to begging despite their years of service. He revealed that more than 120 members of the association of retired officers have passed away within the last three years due to neglect.
Addressing the current administration’s failure to address these grievances, Atiku challenged President Tinubu to confront the reality of the situation. He stated, “Bola, sit with these officers. Look them in the eye. Tell them how you expect them to live.”
In response to these challenges, Atiku pledged that if elected in 2027, his administration would implement a “Police Dignity Guarantee Plan.” This initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for both serving and retired officers, including the auditing and settlement of verified pension arrears and gratuity claims according to a fixed payment schedule.
Furthermore, the proposed plan includes provisions for insured healthcare for all officers, specifically covering treatment for personnel who sustained injuries while in the line of duty.
