A woman in her 40s allegedly stabbed her three children inside a car in Australia’s Blue Mountains, killing a five-year-old child and leaving two others critically injured on Sunday.

Police said the woman was being treated as the suspect in what they described as a domestic-related homicide, while investigators continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The three children, all aged five and under, were found with stab wounds inside a car parked on a vacant block near a fire trail. Cyclists who came across the scene alerted others, while members of the public attempted to provide first aid before emergency services arrived.

“The mother is the suspect in this matter, for domestic related homicide, and that investigation is ongoing,” McKenna said, adding that police believed her injuries were self-inflicted.

Police said they were not searching for another suspect and that the woman had not previously come to their attention. Investigators were also examining the weapon allegedly used and the circumstances that led to the attack.

The children’s father was at work when police contacted him about the incident. Superintendent John Nelson said officers had informed him of the deaths and injuries involving his family.

Residents described the scene as shocking, with emergency services converging on the normally quiet area. One resident, Glenn Lyall, said he initially believed there had been a road accident after seeing a vehicle and two cyclists near the scene.

Another resident, Peita Davies, said neighbours were confused about how the family came to be at the location, saying nobody in the area had heard anything before the emergency response.

Supt Nelson praised members of the public who rushed to assist the injured family and said the incident had been traumatic for witnesses and emergency responders. Police said officers who attended the scene would also be offered support.

The incident occurred during a particularly deadly weekend in New South Wales, where police were also investigating the alleged deaths of three women in separate incidents within about 12 hours on Saturday.

Blue Mountains councillor Darren Rodrigo expressed condolences to the affected family and thanked residents and emergency responders who provided assistance at the scene.

Police are continuing their investigation into the alleged stabbing, including the weapon used and the events leading up to the deaths and injuries.
