Kenyan Senators Demand Probe After 36 Students Became Pregnant In Govt Secondary School | Sahara Reporters

The senators, led by Nominated Senator Catherine Muma, made the call during their visit to Malindi Women’s Prison in Kilifi County on Sunday as part of their Senate Mashinani tour.

The Kenya Women Senators Association has called for an investigation into the reported pregnancy of 36 students of Bakisa Secondary School in Webuye, Bungoma County.

The senators, led by Nominated Senator Catherine Muma, made the call during their visit to Malindi Women’s Prison in Kilifi County on Sunday as part of their Senate Mashinani tour.

According to Kenyan media outlet, Citizen Digital, the lawmakers demanded an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the pregnancies and identify those responsible.

Muma said the situation should not be treated as normal and called for collaboration between relevant authorities to ensure those responsible were brought to justice.

“We make it seem like it is okay for children to be pregnant. As KEWOSA we detest this and we are willing to work with the Minister for Interior to make sure that the investigations move,” she said.

Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda also called for the arrest of those responsible.

“We would want to see those perpetrators arrested,” she said.

The senators urged the Ministry of Education, the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to act swiftly and identify those involved.

They said the reported cases had affected the education and welfare of the students, with 13 of the girls already having given birth, 13 currently pregnant and 10 having dropped out of school after becoming pregnant.

Meanwhile, the police in Bungoma County have commenced investigations and launched a manhunt for suspects linked to the cases.

Webuye East Assistant County Commissioner Emmanuel Kenga said authorities would pursue those accused of preying on minors.

“I have a list of the cases and we will deal with those responsible,” Kenga said.

The school management said the incidents had disrupted the education and wellbeing of the affected students.

The senators also used their visit to the Malindi Women’s Prison to call for improvements to the facility’s rehabilitation programme.

They urged authorities to provide inmates with skills and other forms of support to help them reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.
