Twenty-nine people have died and 60 others are receiving treatment in Ondo State following a suspected toxic-alcohol incident linked to locally made alcoholic and herbal drinks, including the beverage popularly known as Monkey Tail. The deaths were reported mainly in Odigbo LGA after two naming ceremonies where the drinks were consumed. Authorities have seized samples, arrested people reportedly connected to the sale of the drinks and sent blood, urine and beverage samples for toxicological analysis. While Monkey Tail has been linked to the incident, officials say laboratory results are still needed to scientifically establish what caused the deaths.
