A CCTV footage and witness accounts have helped secure the conviction of a 36-year-old registered sex offender, Babatunde Odutola, after he exposed himself and masturbated in front of a woman aboard a train travelling towards Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Odutola was sentenced to 44 weeks in prison at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 14, after pleading guilty to one count of outraging public decency and breaching a suspended sentence order.

The incident occurred at about 7pm on Friday, September 11, while Odutola was travelling on a train through Cheshire towards Manchester Piccadilly railway station, according to the British Transport Police.

The police said Odutola approached the woman, “looked her up and down intimidatingly” and acted aggressively after she chose not to engage with him.

Odutola then exposed himself while seated in a wheelchair and masturbated while looking at the woman and telling her to “come over”, the police said.

CCTV footage subsequently showed Odutola continuing to masturbate as other passengers passed through the carriage.

The British Transport Police said officers arrested Odutola after the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly station.

The evidence gathered during the investigation became significant after Odutola denied the allegations during a police interview.

British Transport Police Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou said the incident must have been terrifying for the woman, who was travelling alone.

“Odutola is clearly an incredibly dangerous individual and his disturbing behaviour must have been terrifying for the victim, who he singled out when she was travelling on her own,” he said.

According to Christoforou, Odutola maintained his denial during the police interview but eventually pleaded guilty after investigators presented the evidence against him.

“He’s shown little remorse for his actions and denied the allegations against him during his police interview. But a stack of incriminating evidence, including damning CCTV and several witness accounts, left him with little choice but to plead guilty when he appeared in court,” he said.

The police said the incident was particularly concerning because Odutola was already a registered sex offender.

The force also said his conduct on the train was not an isolated incident.

“This was not a one-off from Odutola, who was already a registered sex offender, and this type of alarming, predatory behaviour simply will not be tolerated on our railways,” Christoforou said.

The case followed an intervention by another passenger, who escorted the woman away from the carriage after becoming distressed by Odutola’s behaviour.

Police said the CCTV footage later showed that Odutola continued masturbating even as other passengers moved through the carriage.

The footage, combined with several witness accounts, formed part of the evidence presented during the investigation.

Odutola was subsequently arrested when the train reached Manchester Piccadilly and was later prosecuted.

His conviction covers the offence of outraging public decency and the breach of a suspended sentence order.

The British Transport Police said the sentence followed an incident in which a woman travelling alone was singled out by Odutola aboard a train.

Christoforou reiterated that such conduct would not be tolerated on the railway network, particularly where passengers are made to feel threatened or distressed.

The case also demonstrates the role of CCTV and witness accounts in establishing what occurred during incidents on public transport, with police relying on both forms of evidence after Odutola initially denied the allegations.
