There is frenzy in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, after a governorship aspirant, Prof. Ene Nwannaji, formally withdrew his lawsuit challenging the emergence of Chinyeaka Ohaa as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.
Nwannaji discontinued the suit filed at the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu on Thursday, ending a legal tussle that had threatened to derail the party’s preparations for the upcoming gubernatorial election.
Following the court session, Nwannaji declared his support for Ohaa, insisting that his decision was rooted in the realisation that both politicians shared a similar vision for the state.
Addressing journalists after the court proceedings, Ohaa described the development as a breakthrough that has permanently put an end to rumours of fractionalisation within the party.
“The world and Enugu State can now see that NDC is together and we are going to the Government House,” Ohaa declared.
He maintained that the peace process was far from over, revealing that internal mechanisms were still active to bring all remaining aggrieved stakeholders back into the fold ahead of the 2027 polls.
Ohaa urged party faithful to unite, promising that an NDC-led administration in Enugu State would prioritise human capital development, public welfare, and the effective execution of critical infrastructure projects.
Dispelling widespread speculations that his legal challenge and political ambition were financed by external godfathers, Nwannaji insisted that he voluntarily stepped down to foster political unity.
“I saw in him all those things that have been in my mind, all those dreams I have for Enugu. And if he has them, and I have them, the only way Enugu people can benefit is for us to work as a team,” Nwannaji stated.
