BREAKING: Nigerian Police Release Activist Imam After Alleged Abduction, Secret Transfer From Abuja To Taraba
The source further disclosed that Imam’s health had worsened during the period of his detention, prompting immediate medical concerns upon his release.
The Nigerian police have released human rights activist, Abdulmumin Imam, following widespread public outrage over his alleged arrest and controversial transfer from Abuja to Taraba State.
Sources familiar with the development told SaharaReporters that Imam was freed after mounting pressure from Nigerians and rights groups who condemned abuse of power and a blatant violation of his fundamental human rights.
According to a source, despite his release, the police have instructed Imam to return on Friday, a move many fear is part of a calculated plan to remand him in prison regardless of his deteriorating health condition.
“They told him to come on Friday, which we know is part of a plan to send him to prison, but Nigerians must know the truth,” the source said.
The source further disclosed that Imam’s health had worsened during the period of his detention, prompting immediate medical concerns upon his release.
“He has been released and he is currently on his way to the hospital for urgent medical treatment because his health has deteriorated,” the source added.
Imam himself confirmed his release in a statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday evening, expressing gratitude to Nigerians for their support during his ordeal.
He wrote, “I am deeply grateful to Almighty God and sincerely thank the good people of Taraba and Nigerians across the country for the overwhelming support, prayers and solidarity shown to me during this difficult time.
“I have now been released on bail and I am truly humbled by the love and unity demonstrated.
“Your voices and unwavering stand for justice reminded me that I am not alone. This experience has only strengthened my resolve and belief in justice, fairness and the power of collective action.
“More details will be shared soon. Thank you all. I remain sincerely grateful.”
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Imam was forcibly transported from Abuja to Taraba State, where sources say his health has been deteriorating.
The operation was allegedly carried out by a Nigerian police officer identified as Fala, who reportedly used a vehicle without a license plate.
Imam has, however, denied claims by the Taraba State Police Command that he ignored a police invitation prior to his arrest.
Sources who spoke to SaharaReporters on Wednesday said the activist, who is a sickle cell patient, was taken by road in an unmarked vehicle, with his condition worsening due to the long journey without adequate rest.
A source familiar with the situation added that Imam has become increasingly restless and stressed as a result of the prolonged trip and the circumstances surrounding his detention.
“Imam is a sickle cell patient and the long journey without proper stops has taken a toll on him. He has been very restless and is currently battling with serious health issues,” the source said.
A photograph obtained by SaharaReporters shows Imam sitting inside a small green vehicle, appearing visibly fatigued and exhausted.
Witnesses who sighted the vehicle along the Jalingo Road, precisely at Mutum Biyu, said the car bore no number plate and resembled a vehicle typically associated with kidnappers.
