BREAKING: Rabies Outbreak Hits Enugu Community, Government Orders Dog Vaccination
The ministry described rabies as a highly fatal disease, stressing that infection is usually transmitted through bites or saliva of infected animals, particularly dogs.
The Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization has confirmed an outbreak of rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, warning residents to take urgent preventive measures to avoid the spread of the deadly viral disease.
In a public notice dated March 31, 2026, the state government said the outbreak involves dog rabies and poses serious risk to both animals and humans.
“The Enugu State Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization hereby notifies the general public of a confirmed outbreak of dog rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of the State,” the notice stated.
The ministry described rabies as a highly fatal disease, stressing that infection is usually transmitted through bites or saliva of infected animals, particularly dogs.
“Rabies is a highly fatal viral disease that affects both animals and humans. It is primarily transmitted through the bite or saliva of infected animals, especially dogs. Once clinical signs appear, the disease is almost always fatal,” the statement warned.
Authorities urged dog owners to immediately vaccinate their pets as part of containment efforts.
“Immediate Vaccination: All dog owners are urged to vaccinate their dogs and other pets against rabies without delay,” the ministry advised.
Residents were also instructed to restrain their animals and prevent them from roaming freely.
“Pet owners should confine their animals and prevent them from roaming freely,” the notice added, while urging members of the public to “avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals.”
The government further called for vigilance and prompt reporting of suspected cases.
“Any suspected rabid animal (showing signs such as aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behavior, or paralysis) should be reported immediately to the nearest veterinary authority within your local government area,” the statement said.
The ministry also advised individuals bitten or scratched by animals to seek urgent medical attention.
“Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap under running water for at least 10 minutes and seek urgent medical care at the nearest health facility,” the notice stated.
Community leaders were also urged to raise awareness among residents on prevention measures.
The commissioner, however, assured that the government is working with relevant authorities to contain the outbreak and safeguard public health.
Residents were advised to contact the State Veterinary Services Department for further information or to report suspected cases.
