BREAKING: IGP Disu Appoints Female Officer Tainted By ‘Special Consideration’ Promotion Scandal Under Egbetokun As Key Aide
This was disclosed in an internal wireless message issued by the Nigeria Police Force Secretariat and circulated to various departments, units, and commands nationwide.
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has approved the controversial posting of a senior officer to a key position at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
This was disclosed in an internal wireless message issued by the Nigeria Police Force Secretariat and circulated to various departments, units, and commands nationwide.
According to the signal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Eneze Osareine Makoju-Akaba has been appointed as Principal Staff Officer II to the Inspector-General of Police.
The directive instructed all relevant formations to update their records accordingly, noting that the posting takes immediate effect.
An investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that Eneze was among officers promoted under controversial circumstances by former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in 2025.
On August 4, 2025, SaharaReporters published details of the promotions carried out during Egbetokun’s tenure, which were widely criticised and sparked ethnic tensions within the Nigeria Police Force.
The report indicated that out of 37 officers promoted under what was described as “special consideration,” about 30 were allegedly of Yoruba origin, raising concerns over claims of regional bias and “provincial” leadership within the Force.
The development reportedly triggered discontent across various commands, particularly among officers who felt sidelined despite being qualified, allegedly due to ethnic considerations.
Despite the controversy, the police leadership at the time, through its spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, also said to be among the beneficiaries, confirmed that the officers would be formally decorated in the office of the then-IGP.
Authorities initially withheld the full list of the promoted officers, releasing only two names, one from the North and another from the South-East. However, SaharaReporters later obtained the complete list, which showed that a majority of those promoted were of Yoruba origin.
According to the list, Eneze, listed as Ezene Makoju (AP/NO: 106878), then a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), was elevated to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), alongside Bukola Yemisi Kuti and five others.
SaharaReporters has published several reports that Kuti benefited from accelerated promotions within the Force, as well as detailing an alleged romantic relationship between her and Egbetokun.
Further findings indicated that Eneze had served as a Staff Officer under Disu during the period when Disu was Principal Staff Officer to Egbetokun.
Disu was appointed PSO to Egbetokun on June 23, 2023. He served in this role following Egbetokun’s appointment as the 22nd IGP in June 2023, before Disu himself was appointed as the Acting IGP in February 2026, replacing Egbetokun.
“Eneze was part of the list of persons promoted unjustly by Egbetokun. Her promotion from SP (Superintendent of Police) to CSP (Chief Superintendent of Police) was special and so also was her promotion from CSP to ACP and this one,” a top police source said.
“When Egbetokun was leaving, she was posted to OPS (Department of Operations) but Disu brought her back as PSO. Officers are complaining that she is not qualified.”
