Russian Strikes Kyiv University With 160 Students During Classes, Injures Civilians Across Ukraine — Zelenskyy | Sahara Reporters
According to the Ukrainian president, the students survived because they had taken shelter during the attack.
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has condemned a fresh wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine, saying Russian drones struck a university in Kyiv during classes while several other cities and regions came under attack.
Zelenskyy, in a statement posted on X on Wednesday, September 2, said 160 students were inside the university when Russian Shahed drones struck the institution.
According to the Ukrainian president, the students survived because they had taken shelter during the attack.
“Today, Russian ‘shaheds’ struck one of the universities in Kyiv – right during classes. Fortunately, the students were in the shelter – 160 students,” Zelenskyy said.
“Overnight, the Russians struck Odesa. An ordinary residential building and city infrastructure were damaged. Five people were injured, including a child. In Kherson, the Russians struck a building used by first responders and police.
“In the Kharkiv region, thousands of people were left without electricity after a strike, and there are injuries. In many regions, air raid alerts continue because of the threat of jet-powered drones and aerial bombs.”
Zelenskyy accused the international community and world leaders of failing to respond adequately to what he described as a fresh escalation of Russian attacks against Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, there has been far too little response from the world and its most influential leaders to this latest Russian escalation of strikes.”
He warned that the sustained use of Iranian-designed Shahed drones by Russia should not be viewed solely as a Ukrainian problem, arguing that the tactics being deployed against Ukrainian cities could eventually be used against other countries.
“When Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds’ are waging this kind of round-the-clock terror in Europe, it cannot remain a problem for our country alone,” President Zelenskyy said.
“Every such strike against Ukrainians, every such use of ‘shaheds’ and other weapons against our cities and villages is effectively Russia practicing tactics that it is preparing for other countries and other peoples as well.”
The Ukrainian president called for immediate international action to halt what he described as Russian aggression.
“Now is the time to act. Evil must be stopped the moment it rears its head.”
Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s international partners already know the measures he believes are required, including stronger air defence support, tougher sanctions against Russia and increased defence production.
“Absolutely clear and decisive steps are needed to pressure Russia for this and to help Ukraine. Every partner knows what is needed: air defense for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and a significant increase in defense production. I thank everyone who is truly helping!”
The latest attacks come amid the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine, with Russian forces regularly deploying drones and missiles against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure while Kyiv continues to appeal for additional Western military and air-defence support.
