The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man identified as Sibamay Zakaria, who was captured in a viral video assaulting a pastor accused of making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad.
Zakaria was arrested on Thursday after the video showing him assaulting the handcuffed suspect, identified as Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, circulated widely on social media.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed Zakaria’s arrest in a statement issued on Thursday, saying he was taken into custody to assist with investigations.
The statement read, “The Ghana Police Service has arrested suspect Sibamay Zakaria who was captured in a viral video assaulting a suspect.”
According to the police, Zakaria remains in custody and will be arraigned before the court after investigations are completed.
“Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and all persons found culpable will be taken through the necessary disciplinary processes,” the police said.
SaharaReporters previously reported that the Ghana Police Service had launched a manhunt for a man captured in a viral video assaulting a pastor, who had been accused of making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad.
In the video seen by SaharaReporters, the pastor was seen standing while handcuffed as a man dressed in traditional clothing emerged from behind him and slapped him.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement issued earlier on Thursday, condemned the assault and said it had intensified efforts to identify and arrest the suspect seen in the video.
The police said the suspect would be brought before the court to face the consequences of his actions.
