The Ukrainian president called for increased international pressure on Russia, arguing that accountability for attacks on civilians would be necessary for any lasting peace.
Russian drone strikes on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih of Ukraine have killed at least five people and injured 52 others, including six children.
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who made this known on Friday, said the attack was carried out in two waves, with the second strike targeting emergency responders who had arrived at the scene following the initial attack.
“The Russians have dealt an absolutely cynical and vile blow to an ordinary shopping center in Kryvyi Rih,” Zelenskyy said on X while condemning the attack.
“The strike drones operated in two waves: half an hour after the first hit and the ensuing fire, there was a second strike on the emergency services.
“As of now, five fatalities are known. My condolences to the families and loved ones. At least 52 people have been injured so far, including six children. All the wounded are receiving the necessary medical assistance.”
Zelenskyy said the Russian drones had deliberately struck the area in two waves.
“An absolutely cynical and despicable strike was carried out by the Russians against an ordinary shopping center in Kryvyi Rih,” he said.
Condoling with the families of the victims, Zelenskyy said, “My condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed.”
The Ukrainian president called for increased international pressure on Russia, arguing that accountability for attacks on civilians would be necessary for any lasting peace.
“Such strikes are nothing short of a terrorist act. And the world must respond to them accordingly—with real pressure on the aggressor. For peace to be possible, Russia must face real accountability,” he said.
The latest attack added to the continuing civilian toll from Russia’s war in Ukraine, with Ukrainian authorities repeatedly accusing Russian forces of targeting civilian infrastructure and populated areas.
