The resignation comes as the Assembly faces a fresh leadership crisis following reported efforts by some lawmakers to impeach Agbebaku.
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, resigned from his position on Monday amid moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a Facebook post on Monday.
She announced the development without giving details on the circumstances surrounding the Speaker’s decision, saying further information would be made public later.
“Edo Assembly Speaker Rt Hon Chief Blessing Agbebaku Resigns,” Adodo-Ebojele wrote in the post confirming his exit.
The resignation comes as the Assembly faces a fresh leadership crisis following reported efforts by some lawmakers to impeach Agbebaku.
His departure leaves the House to begin the process of selecting another lawmaker to preside over its affairs.
Following his resignation, the Deputy Speaker, Jonathan Ibhamawu, presided over the plenary session, paving the way for the emergence of Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Idaiyi was subsequently sworn in as Speaker, marking a change in leadership of the state legislature.
Agbebaku had served as Speaker since June 2023, when he emerged as the presiding officer of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly. He later moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in May 2025.
The Speaker had also faced political disagreements within his constituency and the APC in recent months.
In April 2026, APC leaders in Owan West rejected an endorsement of Agbebaku for another term in the Edo State House of Assembly, while Agbebaku subsequently sought reconciliation with party leaders in the area.
The immediate circumstances behind his resignation were not disclosed in the statement confirming his exit as of Monday morning.
