Adamawa Police Commissioner Orders Probe Of DPO For Alleged Arbitrary Arrests, Extortion, Misconduct | Sahara Reporters
The directive followed a publication alleging that residents had demanded the removal of the Jambutu DPO over alleged arbitrary arrests, extortion and the collection of money from suspects as bail fees.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, Kabiru Umar Hassan, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to investigate allegations of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, bail extortion and other forms of misconduct against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jambutu Division.
The directive followed a publication alleging that residents had demanded the removal of the Jambutu DPO over alleged arbitrary arrests, extortion and the collection of money from suspects as bail fees.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on Saturday, the police said it had taken the allegations seriously and would investigate them.
The CP consequently directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Hamzat Tambai, to conduct a “thorough and discreet investigation” into the allegations.
The Command said it does not condone arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, extortion or any form of professional misconduct by its personnel.
It also stressed that bail is free, warning that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public as a condition for granting bail.
“The Command further reiterates that bail is free, and no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public as a condition for granting bail,” the statement said.
The police urged members of the public with complaints or information relating to the allegations to come forward and assist the investigation by providing specific details and available evidence to the SCID headquarters in Yola or any nearby police formation.
The development comes amid growing concerns over alleged abuses by some police personnel in the state, particularly claims involving arbitrary arrests, prolonged detention and demands for money before suspects are released on bail.
The Adamawa Police Command said the investigation is part of its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for the rights of citizens.
