The Police Command in Anambra State has banned the use of knockout bangers and other social explosives during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Anambra.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, announced the ban in Awka, during Wednesday’s news briefing to showcase some of the command’s achievements during the year.

“As we enter the festive season, the command has deployed robust security measures to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a peaceful celebration.

“We urge the public to adhere to the following safety advisories – the use of knock-out substances and other social explosives remains prohibited in Anambra,” he said.

Orutugu said that within the period under review, the command, together with other sister agencies, rescued 35 kidnap victims in the state.

He said that the command also detained over 300 suspects linked to robbery, kidnapping, cultism, secessionist activities, rape, and other serious offences.

According to him, the command successfully prosecuted and secured convictions in several criminal cases during the year.

Orutugu said that the command recovered 2,000 arms and ammunition, including explosives and other dangerous items.

He said that the command also recovered over 60 stolen vehicles, including motorcycles, during the period.

The police chief expressed joy that there had been a decline in the crime rate in the state due to the cooperation of the State Government, other security agencies, communities and residents with the police.

“Throughout the year, the command observed fluctuations in crime patterns, largely influenced by socio-economic realities and evolving security dynamics across the country.

Orutugu said that some of the notable accomplishments of the command included the disruption of multiple kidnapping syndicates operating in some Local Government Areas in the state.

He said that the command also dismantled criminal hideouts and identified black spots through sustained raids and patrols

He listed the gradual return of social life in Ihiala, with weddings, birthdays, and other community events held without intimidation or harassment as one of the command’s major achievements.

Orutugu said that, in spite of the successes, the command faced some challenges in the outgoing year.

He listed the challenges, including the occasional resistance by suspected criminals, misinformation, and non-cooperation from a few members of the public

“However, these challenges have only strengthened our resolve to improve our strategies and operational effectiveness in the coming year.

Orutugu extended warm Christmas and New Year wishes to residents and visitors to the state.
