Police hunt drunken officer for killing Niger resident

The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shuwala Danmamman, has directed the command to investigate and fish out the policeman who went on a shooting spree while drunk and killing a Niger State resident.

Danmamman directed the Divisional Police Officer, Maitumbi, to investigate and identify the team who allegedly committed such a heinous.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened on Monday when the policeman attached to the Metumbi Police Station allegedly shot and killed a Niger State resident under the influence of alcohol.

The policeman whose name was not immediately disclosed was said to have taken more alcoholic drinks than he could manage, picked up his rifle and started shooting sporadically.  In the process, he shot and killed Sani, a resident of the Angwan-Kaje area of the Chanchaga Local Government Area of the state.

The officer was said to have attempted to shoot another man who fled the scene before the drunken policeman could pull the trigger of his rifle.

An eyewitness who did not identify himself said Sani was unlucky to be in the area when the officer began shooting recklessly and was hit by a bullet while another person, a tea maker known as Mai Shayi, was also targeted but managed to escape unhurt.

“The officer shot him unlawfully while he was sleeping. He attempted to shoot another person called Mai Shayi, but he ran and escaped. Bullet shells were found at the scene,” the eyewitness said.

The Niger State Police Command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the tragic incident on Monday night, said the CP had directed the culprits to be brought to book.

“The police command received the complaint of the alleged shooting this morning, which was reported to have occurred at about 3 am of today, Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed DPO Maitumbi to investigate and identify the team who allegedly committed such a heinous act for further necessary action.

“Further development and action taken will be made known to the public in due course,” he said.
