Nigeria won the gold medal in the women’s beach volleyball event at the African Youth Games in Angola after a commanding straight-sets victory over Egypt on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Team Nigeria defeated Team Egypt 2–0, winning 21–17 and 21–15, to cap a dominant run in the competition and secure one of the country’s standout successes at the Games.
President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Musa Nimrod, praised the players for their display and said the victory carried added significance following Nigeria’s absence from two recent World Championships in Qatar and Australia.
Nimrod, who also serves as President of the CAVB Beach Volleyball Commission, said the result reflected the country’s rising status on the continental stage.
“I want to congratulate the players for making the country proud at the African Youth Games in Angola. Pamela Bawa and Joy Lawrences have written Nigeria’s name in gold,” Nimrod said.
“The duo missed two World Championships, but this medal means a lot to the Federation and the country. I also want to commend coach John Iwerima for his proper guidance,” he added.
Nimrod noted that Nigeria was increasingly establishing itself as a leading force in African beach volleyball, pointing to the consistency and quality shown by the women’s team.
He said the long-term ambition of the Nigeria Beach Volleyball Commission was to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, after the country finished second in the last two qualification campaigns.
He also acknowledged the role of the National Sports Commission in ensuring Nigeria’s participation in the event, describing its support as vital to the team’s success.
Nimrod expressed confidence that beach volleyball would continue to deliver medals for Nigeria at both continental and intercontinental competitions, following the gold medal triumph in Angola.
