RB Leipzig forward Xavi Simons is set to miss “several weeks” due to an ankle injury sustained during this week’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool, the German club announced on Thursday.

German media reported that Simons, on loan from parent club Paris Saint-Germain for a second consecutive season, could be sidelined until the new year.

The 21-year-old was substituted after 73 minutes of the match and had to be assisted off the field by two members of Leipzig’s coaching staff.
“Unfortunately, Xavi suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle during yesterday’s Champions League match against Liverpool and will be out for several weeks,” Leipzig said in a statement.

“The method of treatment is still to be determined,” they added.
Leipzig coach Marco Rose commented after the game, saying, “He took a knock, and he’s in quite a bit of pain.”

Simons, who scored the opener for the Netherlands in their 2-1 loss to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, has recorded two goals and one assist in seven Bundesliga matches.

Leipzig, level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga but second on goal difference, host third-placed Freiburg on Saturday.
