There is fresh outrage over the investigation into the suspicious death of former Ondo State governorship candidate and prominent businessman, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), as his eldest son, Samuel Akingboye, accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, of playing what he called “rogue games” to manipulate and derail justice.
In a detailed press statement released on November 13, 2025, and obtained by SaharaReporters, Samuel said that more than nine weeks after his father’s death, the Lagos Police Command has deliberately frustrated the investigation, withheld key findings, and allegedly shown bias in favour of the main suspects — his stepmother and stepbrothers.
“My name is Samuel Akingboye, first son and eldest child of late Otunba Bamidele Akingboye OBA,” the statement began.
It continued: “I address the public today with a heavy heart, compelled by circumstances surrounding my father’s tragic and suspicious death, and the disturbing chain of events that have followed.”
He narrated in detail how events unfolded on the day of his father’s death and how police authorities have since handled the case with what he described as “a shocking level of irregularity.”
According to him, “On September 3rd, 2025, around 7:00 a.m., I woke up to see repeated calls from my security detail on my phone. I immediately called him back, only to be told of a distress call that my father was dead. He said he had been informed by one of my stepbrothers, Melvin. This shocked me deeply as I had been with him the previous day.”
Samuel explained that upon arriving at the hospital, the physical injuries on his father’s body immediately raised suspicion. “The condition of his body contradicted the account given about his death. The physical injuries observed differed sharply from the explanation presented to me,” he stated.
He also alleged that his stepmother and stepbrothers gave “inconsistent and incoherent responses” when asked how the death occurred.
He said that within hours of his father’s death, strange financial movements began to occur. “Barely hours after his death, I received information that a very large sum of money had been moved from my father’s company account to accounts associated with my stepmother and her son, Melvin,” he revealed.
“At the same time, my stepbrothers rushed to my father’s room and office, removing personal valuables and items of interest including vital documents, cash (Naira and hard currencies), phones, and many others. This was at a critical moment when I was still struggling with depositing his corpse at the morgue.”
According to him, his request for an autopsy and proper investigation led to a series of police actions, but the case soon took a suspicious turn.
“When police officers first attempted to visit the VGC residence where my father passed away to gather statements, they were resisted and denied access by my stepmother and her children,” Samuel recounted. “The following day, officers returned with reinforcements and entered the residence. Statements were taken, and the scene was initially assessed under the Ajah Police Division.”
He confirmed that the case was later moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, where the homicide unit and forensic experts visited the scene and recovered CCTV footage from a neighboring property. “CCTV footage was recovered along with forensic samples,” he wrote. “Autopsy proceedings were conducted in the presence of representatives from both sides of the family.”
However, he said the case began to change course when the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, got involved. “Upon completion of the autopsy, the Lagos Commissioner of Police refused communicating the findings to me as the complainant till date and for nearly a week delayed acknowledging the autopsy report,” he stated.
“When I was eventually invited, I discovered that the opposing side had already been engaged earlier, without explanation. They had reportedly visited the CP’s office on Tuesday, while I was invited on Friday. The rationale behind this approach remains a mystery, in that, I had the impression that both parties should be on seat to get briefing from the CP on the result and other findings.”
Instead of releasing the autopsy findings as expected, Samuel said, “The CP announced the creation of a review panel to be headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police and transferred the case again, this time from SCID — a relatively higher authority and specialised department — to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere to restart the investigation afresh.”
He called this move “deeply troubling considering the time already invested, forensic evidence gathered, and the illogicalities involved.”
Samuel accused the Commissioner of deliberately stalling justice. “Despite a one-week timeline promised by the CP to reveal the outcomes of all investigations and the autopsy result, several more weeks passed with no update or official communication from the police,” he said.
"Credible information indicates that a request for case files and updates from the Police by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has not received a due response and has not been acknowledged to the complainant.”
He claimed the evidence available to investigators already points to foul play. “I maintain that the CCTV footage and post-mortem findings reportedly point to violent circumstances surrounding my father’s death suggesting an obvious case of murder. If there is nothing to conceal, I call for these to be released immediately and transparently,” he declared.
The late Akingboye’s son further alleged that while police investigations are being dragged, his stepmother and her children are “already moving to access, alter, or transfer assets, property documents, and business holdings belonging to my late father, even while the investigation is yet to be concluded and he is still in the morgue.”
He added that “personal assets, including vehicles, have reportedly been removed from the family residence in VGC to unknown locations.”
In one of the most alarming parts of the statement, Samuel said he has received death threats. “I have received direct and indirect death threats from my stepmother, her younger brother and her children owing to my pursuit of truth concerning my father’s death,” he alleged.
He also issued a public warning: “Anyone who tries to loot, transact, buy or sell any of the properties, estates, or valuables linked to Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), or any of his companies, is doing so at his or her peril. We have an inventory of all assets, and we will do what is needful at the right time.”
Samuel then appealed to the Inspector General of Police and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene, while calling on civil society, the media, and the public to ensure the truth is not buried.
“I specifically appeal to His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, to intervene in this matter concerning one of the state’s illustrious sons,” he said.
“This process has taken an enormous emotional, financial, and psychological toll, intensified by what appears to be unequal access to resources and influence. They are fighting this investigation with the resources stolen from my father’s account.”
He concluded his statement with an emotional vow to continue the fight for justice: “My father was not just a public figure; he was a human being, a patriot, a provider, and a voice for many. He deserves justice. Our family deserves truth. Society deserves accountability. No matter how long it takes, I will stand firm until justice prevails.”
This latest development comes amid SaharaReporters’ earlier exclusive in September revealing that police investigators had arrested Akingboye’s wife and children after CCTV footage allegedly showed him being dragged out of his Victoria Garden City residence around 2 a.m. before he was found dead.
