Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has been named in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week by pundit Troy Deeney despite Fulham’s 3-2 defeat to West Ham United on Tuesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 28-year-old, who scored both of Fulham’s goals at the London Stadium, earned praise from former Watford captain Deeney for his consistent performances this season.
“He got another couple of goals and has probably been Fulham’s best player throughout. He can play numerous positions, but he has just been really, really good. He’s one of those people that we disrespect and underappreciate, but if he was in your team, you would love him to death. He’s had a really good week,” Deeney said.
Iwobi’s brace took his Premier League tally for the Cottagers to 12 goals in 51 appearances, surpassing his previous records at Arsenal (11 goals in 100 games) and Everton (six goals in 123 matches).
The Nigeria international also reached another milestone during the game, making his 274th Premier League appearance to overtake Nwankwo Kanu as the second most-capped Nigerian in the competition’s history, behind only Shola Ameobi’s 293 appearances.
Other players in Deeney’s Team of the Week included Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, defenders Reece James (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), and Antonee Robinson (Fulham).
The midfield featured Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham’s Carlos Soler alongside Iwobi, while Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Manchester United’s hat-trick hero Amad Diallo, and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak completed the attacking lineup.
Fulham will look to bounce back from their defeat when they face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday (today).
