Glo Foundation, the philanthropic arm of telecoms company Globacom, said on Monday it had begun a nationwide food distribution initiative to tackle food insecurity, starting with Ilaje, a riverside community in Bariga, Lagos State.
The Foundation, in collaboration with the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, distributed food packs containing rice, garri, spaghetti, noodles, tomato paste, vegetable oil, sardines, seasoning cubes, salt, and toothbrushes to low-income families.
The Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Globacom, Adejumobi Mofe-Damijo, said, “The Glo Foundation would undertake a series of interventions that would bear a positive impact on different sectors of society in tandem with its vision of empowerment and care for the less privileged.”
Executive Director of the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Michael Sunbola, commended Globacom for its investment in the food distribution project and called on other corporate organisations to join efforts to reduce food insecurity.
“We are happy to collaborate with Globacom on this. This is the pilot phase, and other parts of the country will also benefit from the drive aimed at touching the lives of the real underprivileged in society,” he said.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the initiative. “It is not easy for my family to feed these days.
With this food pack from Glo, we are sure of what to eat for some weeks,” said Eunice Kehinde, a hairdresser.
The food distribution drive will continue in another Lagos community next Saturday before expanding to other parts of the country, the Foundation said.
