Five people sustained varying degrees of injuries after a commercial bus reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into the median at the Lekki Toll-Gate in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Monday.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after another driver lost control and rammed into a vehicle in the Obanikoro area of the state, resulting in the death of an infant and a woman.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the accident involved a Mazda commercial bus with registration number KRD 412 XR.
According to Taofiq, the bus was being driven at excessive speed when its brake system failed, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into the median.
He said, “LASTMA operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene, promptly securing the affected axis and initiating coordinated rescue operations. Two critically injured passengers were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility by public-spirited individuals, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service professionally evacuated the remaining three victims, including the driver, for urgent medical intervention.
“To guarantee a secure, orderly, and obstruction-free rescue environment, officers of the Rapid Response Squad provided indispensable security reinforcement throughout the emergency operation, effectively averting secondary incidents and ensuring seamless medical evacuation.”
Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, lamented the rising incidence of speed-related crashes across the state and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
Bakare-Oki, through Taofiq, warned motorists against excessive speeding and operating mechanically deficient vehicles.
“He stressed the imperative for drivers to remain perpetually safety-conscious, moderate their speed, and anticipate unforeseen mechanical failures, noting that prudence, vigilance, and strict adherence to traffic regulations constitute the most reliable safeguard against preventable tragedies.
“LASTMA once again calls on all road users to embrace a responsible driving culture, prioritise routine vehicle maintenance, and cooperate fully with traffic regulatory authorities in the collective quest to entrench safer, more orderly, and accident-free roadways across Lagos State,” Taofiq concluded.
PUNCH Metro reported on Monday that the Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that no fewer than 91 people were killed in various road crashes across the state between January and November 2025.
