However, in the early hours of same Thursday, around 4am, DSS operatives reportedly stormed the area, arrested the corps member, and took her to their Abakaliki office.
The family of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Daniela Onyinyechi Ekuma, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of abducting their daughter and transferring her to an undisclosed location after initially detaining her in Ebonyi State.
Speaking to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, the distraught parents revealed that Daniela had travelled from her NYSC camp in Ekiti State to Afikpo North, Ebonyi State, for her grandmother’s burial on August 21, 2025.
However, in the early hours of same Thursday, around 4am, DSS operatives reportedly stormed the area, arrested the corps member, and took her to their Abakaliki office.
According to the family, she was later moved to an unknown location, with no official explanation or disclosure about her whereabouts.
The distraught parents told SaharaReporters that they had made several efforts to find out where she was taken, but the DSS has refused to provide any information.
However, they remain deeply worried about her safety.
"My daughter (Miss DANIELA ONYINYECHI EKUMA came from NYSC Camp in Ekiti State for the burial of the grandmother on 21st August 2025. But she was arrested in Afikpo North of Ebonyi State by DSS in the early hours (4.00am) of Thursday 21st August 2025 to their office at Abakaliki and later taken to unknown location.
"Presently I don't know her whereabout and I have made several efforts to know where she was taken to again without result and DSS is not disclosing any information about her.
"Please kindly help me in my daughter's case. She is suppose to resume at her NYSC place of assignment this September 2025," the distraught parents said.
Illegal and arbitrary detentions by security agencies particularly in the South-East region of Nigeria have been a disturbing trend of human rights violations.
SaharaReporters two weeks ago reported that a Nigerian woman, Mrs. Chioma Chikadibia, died after months of battling depression and ill health over the continued detention of her husband and three daughters by the Abia State Police Command.
Her death was confirmed to SaharaReporters by her surviving daughter, Chikiezie Ifeoma Lilian, who revealed that her mother died on Friday, August 8, 2025.
“I lost my mom on Friday 8 of August 2025. She died out of depression and other stuff over the continual detention of her husband (my father) and her three daughters by the police,” she had said.
The detainees — 63-year-old shoemaker, Mr. Chikadibia Sunday, and his daughters, Glory, Ngozi, and Ogechi — were arrested on April 12, 2025, during a violent midnight raid on their home in Alaukwu Village, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area.
