A serious inter-agency confrontation has erupted in Benue State following allegations that personnel of the Nigerian Army opened fire on the Commander of Operation Zenda, CSP Lyam Akegh, and his patrol team. SaharaReporters learnt that CSP Akegh and his team were on official duty in Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area when the incident occurred. The shooting occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, and has triggered outrage among security watchers who described it as another alarming case of “indiscipline and inter-agency hostility” capable of undermining security operations in the state. In a public statement released, it was stated that “the Commander of Operation Zenda, Benue State, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Lyam Akegh was allegedly attacked by some personnel of the Nigerian Army while on official duty.” CSP Akegh was said to be on routine patrol in Naka — a community recently plagued by intensifying criminal activities — and has been widely credited for “relentless efforts in combating crime and restoring peace.” According to eyewitness accounts cited in the statement, after concluding the patrol, Akegh and his team were allegedly ambushed. The statement said: “After successfully completing his patrol operations in Naka, the CSP and his team were allegedly ambushed by soldiers who opened fire sporadically on his official vehicle for reasons yet to be ascertained.” It added that the attack, reportedly carried out by soldiers stationed in Naka, was “highly condemnable” and demanded immediate action from military authorities. “This unfortunate incident… is highly condemnable. It calls for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Army authorities to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

The statement further warned that such conduct undermines joint security operations in a state struggling with banditry, communal violence, and kidnapping. “Acts of indiscipline and inter-agency hostility not only endanger lives but also weaken the collective effort to secure our communities. It is therefore imperative that the Nigerian Army takes decisive steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.” A witness also expressed concern for the safety of the CSP, adding that “I pray for the continued protection of CSP Akegh, whose unwavering dedication has ensured that citizens of Benue State sleep with their two eyes closed.”
