Barau FC coach Ladan Bosso has set his sights on a continental ticket after his side produced a stunning 4–1 demolition of Rivers United in a Nigerian Premier Football League encounter on Friday.
Speaking after the match at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Bosso stressed the importance of sustaining performance and focus throughout the season, noting that a strong finish to the first round would set the team up to carry their current momentum into the second half and make a serious push for qualification to continental competitions.
“The most important thing for all of us is how we finish the first round. If we enter the second round with this kind of tempo, determination, and commitment, I think we should evolve for a continental ticket,” Bosso said.
The win propelled Barau to 16th place on the NPFL table with 20 points from 17 matches, ensuring they moved above the relegation zone after 18 matches.
Bosso also highlighted the team’s effective game management and clinical finishing as key factors in the triumph.
“We were able to manage the game well and secure the result. The players showed great composure, and that is what will carry us forward,” he said.
The 58-year-old former Nigeria U-20 coach, known for his pragmatic approach and emphasis on defensive solidity, expressed particular pride in his players’ response after conceding an early goal in the fourth minute to Rivers United.
“That one goal against us was like a wake-up call, but it did not wind the players down. I give the players kudos for not being discouraged after conceding,” Bosso added.
The Maliya Boys, who were trailing for much of the first half, quickly turned the match in their favour.
Midfielder Usman Maidubji equalised from the penalty spot in the 25th minute before Jimmy Ambrose put the hosts ahead on the stroke of halftime. Former Rivers United player Kabir Abdullahi, introduced as a substitute, then scored twice in the 64th and 72nd minutes to complete a comprehensive victory, marking Barau FC’s biggest top-flight win in club history.
